From the Remember Me Thursday website:
“Millions of beautiful, adoptable pets will lose their lives in 2016,” states Mike Arms, President and CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center. “We all come from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, but together, we can raise our voices and share one life-saving message and literally save millions of pets on this one day.”
In the previous three years of the campaign, 164 countries supported the movement with hundreds of thousands of individuals and more than 500 separate animal welfare organizations around the globe holding candle-lighting ceremonies of their own, spreading the message on social media, visiting the Remember Me Thursday website, or lighting a virtual candle. Celebrities such as Diane Keaton, Carrie Ann Inaba, Katherine Heigl, Alan Cumming and dozens more, along with professional sports teams, have used social media to share the “opt to adopt” message and save orphan pets. This year social media pet stars such as Lil Bub, Cole & Marmalade, and Tuna Melts My Heart have also joined the cause.”
According to 2013 data from the Humane Society of the United States, Each year, over 3.4 million orphan shelter pets lose their lives without finding their forever home. Oh my stars, that’s just way too many! And also in 2013 only 30% of pets in US households come from rescue facilities. We sure hope that number is more now. We’d love for it to be 100%!
Two of our favorite animal advocating celebrities, Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed are luminaries on the Remember Me Thursday website.

It’s easy to get involved in Remember Me Thursday!
- Light a virtual candle on Thursday at www.RememberMeThursday.org;
- Share how you #RememberTheRescue on #RememberMeThursday by sharing pictures of how you remember and shine a light on orphan pets with your own rescue pets across all social media channels.
- Add your rescue pet photo on the #RememberTheRescue Photo Wall for a chance to win funds, food, and toys for a shelter or rescue that you love.
- Always choose to adopt rescue or shelter animals rather than purchasing pet store animals, and encouraging friends and family to do the same.
We are so grateful for the people, rescue and shelter that saved us. We’re going to use the hashtag #RemembrMeThursday on social media today. Are you?

I hope Remember Me Thursday is all over social media today!
ReplyDeleteThat so many cats never have homes makes me so sad. Bear was homeless when we met. Over the last 10 years, he's saved my life every single day ... I can't imagine my life without him. And yet, when I found him, most people would've considered him a nuisance and unwanted. Every life matters ... EVERY SINGLE ONE. For each cat that is killed because there isn't a home, we lose out on that potential ... the potential to make the world and humanity better.
ReplyDeleteWe purr for all the animals in shelters waiting for their forever homes...and for all those who sadly never made it out.
ReplyDeleteL & L....havin come frum de streets and havin been ina shelterz, we all noe how veree for chew net we iz ta haza place ta call home ~~~~~~ ♥♥♥
ReplyDeleteToday is such an important day. I'm thrilled to see so many bloggers spreading the word!
ReplyDeleteWe are firm believers in adopting from a shelter. M says every cat they have ever had came from a shelter and they were to happy to be adopted and have a loving home that they turned out to be the most loving pets. I was in a shelter for 4 months before M and D came along and gave me a home. They couldn't love me more and I couldn't love them more. It was a "win / win" for all of us.
ReplyDeleteThat was such a nice post sweet friends. I shall always remember the forgotten because I was so close to being one of them.
