Save Your Cat's Teeth! It's National Pet Dental Health Month.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month

Dental disease is the most common disease seen in pets. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA),  80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by the age of three. Proper dental care can detect dental disease that not only affects the mouth, but can also lead to more serious health problems such as heart, lung, and kidney disease.

Signs of dental disease can include bad breath, dropping food or chewing only on one side of the mouth, facial swellings or draining wounds, bleeding or discharge from the mouth or nose, sneezing, pawing at the mouth, tooth grinding, or discolored teeth. Often there are no obvious signs of dental disease and some cats with dental disease still eat without a noticeable change in appetite.  However, if you notice any signs you should take your cat to the vet for a check up.

Dental Disease can be prevented by ensuring your cat gets regular dental exams and by establishing a cleaning routine.

If you’re as unsuccessful at tooth brushing as I am, there are dental chews, gels, and water additives.  These are not as effective as tooth brushing, though.

Last July at our annual exams, both girls got clean bills of dental health.  I was very happy about that! And I'm hoping this continues.

Do you brush your cat's teeth?

  5. Excellent post sweetie. I has no toothies due to a condition called Stomatitis. I had that disease when M and D adopted me, only they didn't know it at the time. My story is published in my blog. I'm doing fine tho without toothies - we just have to work a little harder. M buys me kibble that is smaller in size and I still manage to eat it. She also buys me canned cat food, but not in chunks.

  8. There's no way we will allow the humans to brush our teeth, but we're glad that there are additives for water that will help for kitties like us who are stubborn about handling.
