Hello and happy Saturday Caturday! I’m so happy to be spreading the word about the third annual Clear The Shelters event again this year! Lexy and I just love this day because it’s our wish for all shelters to be empty and for all animals to be with their forever families. *sigh*… maybe someday the world will be that way.
Until then I’ll spread the word about #ClearTheShelters! Clear the Shelters is a ground-breaking, community-driven initiative which matches deserving animals with loving, permanent homes. The first Clear The Shelters event was launched in Texas in 2014 through a partnership between NBC in Dallas-Fort Worth and Telemundo. Over 2,200 animals were adopted in one day through dozens of participating shelters. How cool is that? Since that event was such a success, Clear The Shelters went nationwide last year.
Here in New York City the line for the ASPCA Adoption Center went half way around the block. (NYC blocks are long, so that’s a lot of people!) Seventy-six cats and five dogs found their forever homes that day, and in the entire tri-state area 1,046 cats and dogs were adopted. Those numbers are music to our ears! But the ASPCA was not the only shelter that had successful adoptions that day. Nationwide (including Puerto Rico) 400 shelters participated which resulted in almost 20,000 animals being adopted!! Now that’s really music to our ears! Oh, it gets better… just hang on a second while I catch my breath… OK… dozens of shelters were completely emptied! Imagine that!
Most (if not all) shelters waive the adoption fees or at least lower them. To find a participating shelter in your area, check out this map. If you’re in NY or the Tri-State Area, there will be a live counter tallying how many animals went to their forever homes. I don’t know about you, but we’re going to be watching all day! For a list of some of the shelters in NY and NJ who are participating in today's event go here. And for a nationwide adoption counter go here! (I love giving our readers lots of resources!)
#ClearTheShelters is made possible through a partnership between the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations (11 NBC stations, 17 Telemundo stations and regional news network NECN). We are very grateful these corporations are willing to bring attention to animal homelessness. What a wonderful world it would be if more would participate and spread the word.
Don’t forget to join the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #cleartheshelters!
