Forgotten Felines at Tabby's Place - Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week

Hello and happy Friday! I’m here to bring you our third post in our “Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet” week series.  Today I’m presenting some of the “Forgotten Felines” at Tabby’s Place.  If you’ve seen our other post on the sancuary here you already know that Tabby’s is one of Mommy’s favorite places on earth and she’s met many of these cats.  Now, to be considered a “forgotten feline” means that the cat has been there 5+ years. That right… I said 5+ years! *shakes head* That’s way too long to be looking for your forever home if you ask me.

First up is Mango.

“Between his snuggly ways, his golden good looks and his zest for life, our charming chatterbox may be the sweetest, sunniest cat at Tabby's Place. Meeting Mango is sweeter than the tropical treat for which he's named, and he's equally delighted to meet you. But, his refusal to use the litter box has proven the "kiss of death" for potential adopters.” Mango wins over any person’s heart as soon as the meet them.  Then comes the dreaded “but…”. Poor Mango. Mango is a favorite of Mommy’s and Aunt Jenna’s. They go every December for their Christmas visit when we pack up a boat load of donations. But since Mango now has cancer, they’re going in October because they want to make sure they get to visit with him this year.

This is Jackie.

“From the day she arrived at Tabby's Place, Jackie has been what you'd call "a character." With enormous glass-green eyes and a mostly-white coat, she's undeniably stunning. With a fiery temper and a sharp set of teeth she's not afraid to use, she's also undeniably ... well, wacky. But a funny thing has happened along the way to Jackie's senior years. At some point, Jackie decided that she adores people. Jackie will rub your legs happily all day, but if you take that as an invitation to pet her, you'll find yourself on the wrong end of those wacky teeth. We've learned that Jackie does best when we let her "pet" us by rubbing, and don't attempt to return the favor. When touched by human hands, Jackie will bite almost immediately. When left to her own devices, though, she's as sweet as a daisy and as affectionate as a Care Bear, just rubbing and rubbing and rubbing.” Mommy says Jackie is adorable and if a person would accept the fact that they have to approach and love her on her terms she’d be the purrfect companion.

There are also some special needs cats at Tabby’s. Mommy fell in love with Raja in 2011 on her first visit to Tabby’s. “Raja is happily ensconced in the employee and volunteer lounge at Tabby’s Place, which assures a constant stream of human attention…as Raja deserves! If you ever have a brush in your hands and head her way, you’ll be in her heart forever. (Raja’s exuberant chirps towards anyone holding a brush make her wishes crystal-clear!)” Beautiful Raja had inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She also has chronic rhinitis (which makes her sound a little snorkley) and gets daily spa treatments with a nebulizer. Over the years Raja has also developed other health issues as she ages.  This is Raja the first time Mommy met her…

and this is Raja the last time Mommy saw her.

The staff lounge is always the last stop on the Tabby’s tour and Mommy can’t wait to get there to see Raja.

This is Carrot.

“With a bottomless appetite for cuddles, fearless climbing skills, and a chirpy mouth that just won’t stop, Carrot has an ageless exuberance that soaks his whole world in sunshine. You might think that such a happy creature must have been born in a bed of roses – or, at least, nutritious vegetables. But Carrot’s glee sings in spite of a sad story. Due to either a traumatic injury or a congenital defect, Carrot has some difficulty in the bathroom department. He’s not exactly incontinent – more like incompletely continent (specifically, paraparetic, with partial loss of voluntary motor function). Although he can use the litter box himself, he can’t completely empty his bladder. This means Carrot requires human help to express his bladder and stay clean and healthy.” Carrot is such a sweetheart! He’s also my kindred spirit… he came from one of New York City’s most crowded shelters. (I wonder if it was the same one I was at?) You know, a vet or a vet tech would make the purrfect parent for Carrot!

All of these cats are very much loved and very well taken care of at Tabby’s. But wouldn’t it be wonderful if a person would open up their hearts to one of them (or another cat at Tabby’s)?

We sponsor Rose every month.

She has some special needs, and we will tell you about her in another post. (But for now you can read about her here.) You can sponsor a cat at Tabby’s, too! You can jump on over to their website and choose who you would like to sponsor each month. You can also donate to general funds, such as the TNR or the kitten fund.

If you missed our other posts in this series, you can see them here and here

Have you adopted a shelter cat?

  1. I love that you focused on these Tabby's Place kitties! I always think of them, and those like them on Remember Me Thursday, because they are the ones who have been waiting for homes the longest. Certainly, Tabby's Place is a great place to be while waiting to be adopted... but there's really no place like home.

  9. Six of us were shelter cats, Sister Kit, we just don't know her early background. We think the less adoptable thing is just stuck in the mind of lesser quality humans.

  11. We are beyond jealous of you that you live near Tabby's Place. We ADORE THEM!!! For over a year we sponsored a kitty there (he ended up finding a home). Due to our financial situation, we had to stop sponsoring the next kitty we were sponsoring........but....we promised Angela when things are better, we will begin sponsoring again. We have blogged about them in the past and just adore them. Angela is a sweetheart....I just adore them all!!!!! xoxo catchatwithcarenandcody

  20. Mango had Mum in tears, she's foolish like that. When you go, tell Mango that a lady in New Zealand wishes she could take him home, that he is loved by many, and to have a good life while he is at Tabby's Place. Thank Tabby's for looking after him won't you?

Why won't people take a cat who needs extra effort? Are people SO lazy? My thought at a shelter is who can I help most, not who will 'fit in' with me life.

  21. Wow! These kitties have such a great place to stay at Tabby's. Pawsome people. Z-girl would love to go with you sometime and meet all of these sweet kitties. We are so sad about Mango. He is lucky to have had a loving community to care for him and we are sending our best thoughts to everyone for happy outcomes. Thank you for going to visit them and for ensuring their stories are shared. It's so important. Peace from all of us to all of you!

  22. These are such beautiful kitties! I'm never quite sure why some kitties end up being overlooked so many times. It is wonderful of you to sponsor Rose! I have adopted a rescue cat before - Cinco was my rescue baby. Obi Wan came from a friend, Manna was a orphaned stray kitten, and Dexter was part of a litter had by a cat that a friend took in.

  27. Forgotten felines.... thats so sad. I have a pet store, and we foster some cats from the shelter that have been passed up as well. People just always want little kittens etc etc...
