In case you’re wondering what exactly this day is about, let me tell you! Clear the Shelters is a ground-breaking, community-driven initiative which matches deserving animals with loving, permanent homes. The first Clear the Shelters event was launched in Texas in 2014 through a partnership between NBC in Dallas-Fort Worth and Telemundo. Over 2,200 animals were adopted in one day through dozens of participating shelters. How cool is that? Since that event was such a success, Clear the Shelters went nationwide the following year. In 2016 over 54,000 pets found their forever homes in one day! Now that’s a success!
This year nearly 700 shelters across the country are teaming up with NBC Owned Television Stations and Telemundo for Clear the Shelters. I have some information on local shelters here in the New York area that are participating.
The Patricia H. Ladew Foundation in Oyster Bay, NY is having an open house from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and adoptions fees will be waived. (You can read about the Ladew Foundation in this post.) Adopters need to be pre-approved before bringing home a cat. These little cuties are Avery and Bliss, who were found as stray kittens.

Adoption fees will be discounted, and all regular protocols for approving applications will be in place. This cutie is Umka, and we hear she’s very friendly!

Adoption fees will be waived for all animals, with the following requirements: Valid Photo ID, proof of pet-friendly living accommodations, all friends and family members that will live under the same roof of the adopted pet need to be present at the time of adoption, dogs that currently live in the household need to be present for a meet and greet, and adoption counseling process needs to be completed for all potential adoptions. Mommy visited there recently and just loved the place! This cutie pie looking for his forever home is Habreu.
