If your cat had a minor medical emergency, would you be prepared? Before working on this post I was not. I’ve been reading a lot about the importance of having a first aid kit for your cat and I thought it was time for me to put one together. Medical emergencies can occur suddenly without warning (like the time Lola fainted). It’s important to get your cat to the vet immediately, but being prepared for minor emergencies before they happen can be beneficial to both you and your cat.
Here's how to make a DIY First Aid Kit for your cat.

Other Recommended Items
- Pillowcase - to help confine your cat for treatment or transport.
- Muzzle or strips of cloth - to prevent biting.
- Blanket - to help keep your cat warm.
- Magnifying glass - to help see small things like splinters.
- Towels - to give your cat a place to lie on, and to help clean up afterwards.
- Eyedropper/plastic syringe - to help with administering hydrogen peroxide, saline, etc. Or to help give your cat some water.
- Your Vet's phone number.
- Medical Records.
A rectal thermometer and petroleum jelly are also recommended items, but this is not something I would be comfortable doing.
Storage
After you have collected all of your supplies for your first aid kit you need something to store them in. A bag or a plastic bin both work nicely. I bought this plastic tote at The Dollar Tree, and everything fits in it. You may also want to consider something with a handle for easy transport.
Tips
- Remember to check your kit periodically for expiration dates on items as well as the batteries in your flashlight.
- Keep it neat and organized. These small containers, also from The Dollar Tree, help organize smaller items.
- Keep it easily accessible. You don’t want to have to rummage through a cluttered closet in the midst of an emergency.
Cost
It’s not expensive to make! I purchased most of these items at The Dollar Tree, and in total spent about $25. Some of the items I already had on hand, which made it easy. You could opt to buy a pre-made kit but by making your own you get to choose the items you want.
Having a first aid kit for Lola and Lexy has put my mind at ease a bit. Now I’m going to make one for my boyfriend and his two cats, Jack and Boomer.
Do you have a first aid kit for your pet?
Dawn
This is awesome! We have a teeny first aid kit, but it's nowhere near what we really need for an emergency.
ReplyDeleteWhat a smart idea!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a first aid kit for the cats per se, but we've got everything at hand! And I've updated the vet information page too, for The Hubby, since I've got all of it stored in my phone.

ReplyDeleteGreat post. I really need to do this.
ReplyDeleteExcellent info! I have never had a kit and now I've started to gather one! thanks
ReplyDeleteI've never had a first aid kit for humans or cats. But when it comes to the cats, I'd never forgive myself if something happened to them and I wasn't prepared.
ReplyDeleteExcellent post. I totally need to do this.
ReplyDeleteWe have a good first aid kit for the dogs, and an emergency bug out kit as well. However, I need to make sure everything is still up to date.
ReplyDeleteWhat great info here! I know what I'll be making soon. I obviously have a kit for humans, but having a pet-focused one too is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteWow, such a great idea! I admit I have many of these items but they are definitely not all in one place. And LOL, a pillow case. Rosie would not like that one bit, but I definitely can see why it might be helpful in an emergency.
ReplyDeleteGreat post and I think every pet home should have a First Aid Kit for their pets as anything can happen and if you are not prepared it could land up being even worse. I have one for Layla thank goodness
ReplyDeleteFabulous post and such an extensive list! I know about the importance of having a pet first aid kit but do I have one? No! We sort of have a few things in the bathroom I could dig up but that won't help when a quick response is needed. You've definitely motivated me to stop procrastinating and get a proper kit put together. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI really have to print this out! I’m a bad cat mom because I should have a medical kit put together, after all we’re 10 cats here! Thank you so much for this.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great detailed list for what to pack in an emergency. Very helpful. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome. What an important post! We have a kit, but we love how this one is so organized!
ReplyDeleteThese tips are great. I think they would work for all types of pets, too, not just cats!
ReplyDeleteI love your DIY Kit, it's terrific! I love that everything is in water tight containers. Sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove & Biscuits,
Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them
Great suggestions for a DIY first-aid kit. I have to laugh, though--mine started this small but now it's about 10x bigger as I keep adding more things to it.
ReplyDeleteYou have inspired me to do a first aid kit. I had a pre-prepared one somewhere but time to check. Great list and tips.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! We don't have a first aid kit together and we know we should. Your list is wonderful and we'll get Mom Paula on it now!
ReplyDeleteTerrific roundup of tips! We have a First Aid Kit always at the ready! Ours is in a large red "go" bag in case we need to take it along. Always great to be prepared, and hope it is never needed.
ReplyDeleteGreat info, thanks!
