Boxiecat - The Healthier Clay Litter (Review and Giveaway)

One of my goals here at Lola The Rescued Cat is to bring information to our readers that can help their cats live happier lives. (Well, not only the cats but their people, too!) One way I accomplish this is by doing product reviews so pet parents get a glimpse of different things that are out there that their cat may enjoy. One thing I tend to shy away from reviewing, though, is litter. You may know how picky Lola and Lexy are about food, but they're even pickier about their litter.

Boxiecat Litter

When I was at Global Pet Expo in March I saw quite a few different kinds of litter, including Boxiecat, which I thought may be a litter that would work well for the girls. When I was offered a review opportunity, I read more about it and happily accepted. I was excited to see how it would work out.

As I mentioned above, Lola and Lexy are picky about their litter. Lexy had a bad experience with a litter change shortly after I adopted her. Lola dislikes litter changes, and with her history of constipation, I have to be careful.

Boxiecat Litter

We each have our litter expectations. For them, it has to be clay, and it can't feel funny on their paws. For me, it has to clump well, be as low tracking as possible, and not smell perfumey. (That last point is also important for Lola because of her nose issues.) I'm happy to say Boxiecat fit the bill for all of us!

Boxiecat Premium Clumping Litter

Boxiecat is a  litter that is Veterinarian recommended and is also the winner of the Cat Fancy Editors’ Choice Award. It is a quality litter that is a healthier option for cat owners who prefer clay litters. Boxiecat is made with hypoallergenic ingredients that do not contain harmful additives or chemicals.

It's soft on cats paws and resists tracking. Boxiecat is an ideal litter for pet parents who recognize the effectiveness of clay but want a healthier and better performing option. And Boxiecat litter is manufactured right here in the USA, which gets big paws up from us.

Boxiecat stays clean because it forms tighter and smaller clumps which results in a longer lasting litter. You can visit Boxiecat's Litter Learning Center for more info and some litter tips and tricks.

Boxiecat Put to the Test

I really put this litter to the test. The bag claims that:
  • It has instant flat top clumps
  • Scoops easily and always stays clean
  • 99,9% dust free
  • Resists tracking
  • Longer lasting

Boxiecat Litter

The first thing I looked for was to see if it's actually 99.9% dust free. Dust free litter is important to me for a couple of reasons; Lola sneezes less and is less stuffy with a litter that isn't dusty, and the litter box is in close enough proximity to my furniture that will result in a coating of dust all over my tables (and sometimes my love seat.) I hate that!

Let's see how Boxiecat performed:

I really tried to kick up some dust, but there was nothing. So far so good! But what about tracking? Would it pass the test? I vacuum up around the litter box daily, sometimes twice. After the first day of using Boxiecat, I noticed little to no tracking. So I decided to go out on a limb and not vacuum up around the box for the duration of the testing period. This is what the result was after a week:

Considering two cats used the litter box for one week, this is a minimal amount of tracking!

Now let's talk about the clumping. I didn't get many of the "flat top clumps", but it didn't really matter. Boxiecat litter forms quick, hard clumps that are very easy to scoop. I didn't have to scrape the bottom of the box to get waset out, and I didn't have any little "crumbs" that fall through the slots on the scoop and just sit in the box. As a result, the box was cleaner. This is that is looked like after a week of using Boxiecat:

It was still clean, and I didn't have any of those little dirty clumps floating around in the box.

But what about odor control? During the testing period, we had several hot days with temps in the 90's and humidity at nearly 100%. When I walked into my apartment I could not smell the litter box. I could smell the garbage, but not the box. I didn't use my usual litter deodorizer while I was trying out Boxiecat so I could accurately gauge its effectiveness.

The Final Verdict

So what's the final verdict? I liked this litter so much that I'm switching from my previous litter. I wasn't able to get a month out of one bag, but with two cats and scooping the box twice a day, I got a little over two weeks out of it before the box was low on litter and needed some more. I could see that one cat could very likely get a month out of one bag.

Regardless, Boxiecat worked well for me. The low dust factor, clumping action, and odor control are all a win for me. Most importantly, Lola and Lexy took to the litter right away and used the box as soon as I filled it. Lola didn't sneeze after using the box, which is a big win. Boxiecat is a litter I definitely recommend.

  1. I don't remember hearing about this brand before. My two are sticklers for clay - and I'm always looking for a tighter clumping, lower tracking litter!

  2. Tylan and I both have asthma, so low dust is the first and most important thing I look for in our litter. I'm glad to hear that Boxiecat meets this requirement. I would love to try the litter with my boys!

  3. For my cat it has to be small and track all over the house! :/ For me, it has to clump well with little tracking OR if not clumping, it has to be large enough not to track and control odor.

  4. Dust and tracking; too big issues for me! I'd give this product a try; thanks for the review!

  5. Dust and tracking is a big issue for me too. I've heard of this brand, but I don't know anything about it. I'm doing some checking. Thanks for the tip.

  6. The litter has to have no scent, dust-free, clump well, no tracking and be affordable. The litter we're using now doesn't clump well at all and sticks to the bottom of the box. It's funny how the litter mat has no tracked litter at all but the floor has tracked litter. TW is tired of cleaning litter out of her bed so I hope we win. MOL! Thanx for the giveaway.

  7. Hmmm, I have not heard of this kind of litter before now. Looks interesting. I love hard clumping low dust and low tracking, too...cause the 'box' is in the front office, and there is much to get covered in dust and litter bits in there...sigh...but thats the best spot for us, MOL! I never use scented cause I have issues with scents and most kitties do not need it. Odor contro-yes! Scent-NO!

Thanks for a chance to siwin some to try it. PIpo would be a good tester as he scatters litter, and piddles on top of old piddles if I am not quick with the scoop, MOL!

  8. This sounds like good litter. We don't use clay here, as my human prefers something more lightweight, and we aren't terribly picky!

  9. Teddy isn't picky about litter but I am....I don't like tracking (a 22 lb. cat is as graceful as an elephant!) and I think this litter might work better on that issue. No odor is also a plus. I don't like "scented litter" but regular unscented litter sometimes STILL has an odor to it. Even if we don't win the rafflecopter giveaway I will definitely be trying Boxiecat! Thanks for the info.

    Hugs, Pam (and Teddy too)

  11. With 5 we go through about 80 pounds of litter each week. We tried this one before but the bags sure were small. Glad it worked out well for you!

  12. We haven't tried this litter yet because it's a little pricey. But the guy at our local pet store was raving about it. We may have to give it a try.

  13. Thanks for sharing your review and some details of this litter. We always try out different litters. But always go back to the first one that we used in the beginning. We are going to take a look at this brand of litter to get it a try. Have a wonderful day.

  14. That looks like a good litter. I like unscented too so that already has me interested. With 13 cats, cheap is important too :) XO

  15. Isn't that strange...Mudpie isn't the least bit picky about her litter! Pawsome review, ladies.

  16. Number one thing I need in a litter is odor control it is a must. I have 19 rescues right now and go through LOTS of litter. I see you use storage tubs also LOL I scoop 5 large storage tubs 2 to 3 times a day and also love a litter that clumps well but doesnt end up like concrete at the bottom of the box.
