I don’t have the typical 9 to 5 job, and I work erratic hours sometimes. Add my part-time job to the mix and there are days I find myself leaving the house at 7:00 am and getting home at 10:00 pm. I always leave food out for Lexy and Lola but worry if it’s enough, or if Lexy will binge eat. When I come through the door at night they are sometimes immediately meowing for their evening meal. 

Cat Pawsitive Pro Program Helps Cats Get Adopted - #RememberMeThursday 2021

One of the things I enjoy about being a writer is having the opportunity to promote pet adoption and encouraging people to support their local shelters and rescues. Although I’m currently not able to physically volunteer at a shelter, be a foster, or do TNR, I can help by volunteering my time writing. 

I have been volunteering for the Jackson Galaxy Project’s Cat Pawsitive Pro (CPP) Program for about three years now. For those of you not familiar with CPP, it is a groundbreaking program developed by Jackson Galaxy and a team of animal behavior experts that helps cats in shelters to find their “mojo” and their forever homes. Cat Pawsitive training applies positive, reward-based clicker training that positively reinforces good behaviors which helps cats in many ways. A shy cat can learn to feel comfortable coming to the front of its cage to meet a potential adopter, a feisty cat can learn to play nice, and an outgoing kitty can even learn to give an endearing "high five" to his visitors. The training also reduces the stressors that might keep a cat from connecting with a potential adopter and can help seal the adoption deal.

Ever since I adopted Lola in January 2011, I've made it a point to advocate for shelter cats and encourage adoption. It brings me great joy to write about how shelters and rescues work hard to shine a light on cats who may be considered "unadoptable" so they are not forgotten and forced to live their lives in a shelter setting.

One in particular that I was thrilled with was (and still is!) volunteering for the Jackson Galaxy Project as a writer for their Cat Pawsitive Pro Program. Today is a very important day in the rescue/advocacy world. Today is Remember Me Thursday, a day where light is shined on and attention is brought to pets in rescues and shelters waiting for their forever homes. It stresses the importance of animal adoption because 2.7 million orphan shelter pets lose their lives without ever finding their forever homes. Alarmingly, only 30% of household pets in the U.S. come from rescue facilities. Only 30%! That number is disturbing to me. There are so many shelters and rescues in the country that are at full capacity, and cannot take in another animal. That means that animal will most likely remain on the street.

I’ve been fairly lucky with destructive scratching with Lexy and Lola. I say “fairly” because, at the end of the day, they are cats. I remember the fits my mother threw when our cats would scratch the furniture as well as I remember shredded couch arms. Compared to that, I am fairly lucky today. Lexy and Lola will scratch the furniture from time to time, even with scratchers nearby. I'm frequently redirecting them.
